Shake a new, unopened bottle and the cotton produces no sound at all, having been packed tightly enough at the factory to eliminate rattle entirely, a small acoustic guarantee that nothing inside has shifted in transit. It sits, compressed to perhaps a third of its natural volume, directly beneath the cap, and expands measurably within seconds of the seal breaking, a soft exhale of fiber regaining shape it has been denied since packaging. Its stated purpose, printed nowhere on the label, is to keep pills from grinding against each other and the plastic during shipping, a padding role it performs adequately for exactly one trip from warehouse to pharmacy shelf. After that, its usefulness ends and its inconvenience begins: pharmacists and patients alike must extract it, usually with two fingers pinching against the neck of the bottle, sometimes with tweezers, occasionally by upending the bottle and shaking with real frustration until fibers separate and cling to the rim. Studies of texture across dozens of brands find the fiber consistently the same coarse, slightly waxy grade, chosen for compression and cost rather than any tactile virtue; it holds no scent, offers no give worth noting, and disintegrates faintly at the edges after repeated handling. Most bottles, once opened, are refilled without it. It is discarded, unremarked, into whichever bin is nearest, having done its single job and left no further instructions.
