The gymnasium basketball hoop

Under the fluorescent lights, the gymnasium hoop registers each impact as a small, complete event: rim shudders, net whips once, and the backboard hums for exactly as long as it takes a body to land. It is bolted eighteen inches from a glass rectangle bracketed to a steel arm, itself sunk into a wall that predates the current paint by three coats, and it has not moved, measurably, in either direction, in longer than anyone on staff has worked there. The rim takes the abuse a net cannot: a season of misses at odd angles, a stray dodgeball, the occasional student attempting to hang from it, which produces a sound distinct from the sound of scoring, flatter, more resigned. Its orange enamel has worn to bare metal at the point of most contact, a crescent the width of a basketball's equator, precisely where physics says it should be. During assembly, the hoop is ignored entirely; during practice, it is the only thing anyone looks at. Between those states it simply holds its angle, exact, unbothered by the difference, waiting for the next ball to confirm, again, that ten feet is still ten feet.
