The drive-through pneumatic tube

Air pressure does the work a conveyor would do more slowly, and announces itself with a soft double thud.

The moment a check drops into the carrier, the canister seats itself against a rubber collar and vanishes upward on a compressed exhale that reaches the car before the eye can follow it. Somewhere inside the building, a chute returns the sound as a soft double thud, first the carrier landing, then the lid settling. The tube itself runs in a wide arc from window to wall, a permanent piece of architecture that most branches route along the outside of the building like exposed plumbing, visible to anyone waiting behind the car ahead. Children in back seats treat the arrival of the carrier as an event worth turning around for. Adults treat it the same way and pretend otherwise. The system moves receipts, cash, lollipops, and the occasional forgotten debit card at a speed no walk-up teller could match, and it does this dozens of times a day without a single moving part visible from outside the tube. Air pressure alone accounts for the whole performance: build it up behind the carrier, release it, and physics does what a conveyor belt would do more slowly and with far less drama. The return trip is quieter, gravity assisted, the carrier gliding back down at an angle built into the tube's slope. Most drivers never ask how it works. Most drivers are simply glad that it does.
