A locked gate separates the safe deposit room from the rest of the vault, and behind it runs a wall of small steel doors, floor to ceiling, in tight, regular rows, each no larger than a shoebox and none labeled with anything beyond a stamped number. The room stays cooler than the lobby, windowless, lit by a single fixture that never seems to flicker or fail, as if the wall itself demanded better maintenance than the rest of the branch. Every door carries two keyholes side by side, one for the customer's key and one for the bank's, a small piece of Cold War logic still built into hardware ordered new every year. Most doors stay shut for years at a stretch, opened twice: once to deposit whatever mattered enough to lock away, once to retrieve it, sometimes by a different generation of the same family. On the day observed, one door near the bottom row stood open a few inches, its drawer pulled partway out, a bank employee waiting nearby for a customer who had stepped away to find a signature card. The gap looked almost wrong against the wall's otherwise unbroken symmetry, a single missing tooth in a very long, very patient row. Nobody could say, walking the aisle, which boxes held jewelry, which held nothing at all, and which had not been visited since the branch changed hands twice over. The staff refer to all of it simply as inventory, and move on to the next customer.
