The sun visor

Closer kin to a garment than to a fixture: padded, fabric-wrapped, hinged twice to fold flat against the headliner when not required and to swing down, then sideways on a secondary pivot, when the sun insists. Catalogued across fourteen vehicles, the material occupies a narrow band among the greys, specifically the warmer greys, closer to felt than to plastic, chosen, it seems, precisely because it photographs as nothing and irritates no one. The vanity mirror set into its underside, when present, is lit in perhaps one trim in five, and the light, when it exists, arrives in a color temperature no cosmetic counter would sanction. The visor's true achievement is acoustic, not optical: the fabric absorbs a narrow register of road noise that the headliner alone would return as echo, a fact no owner mentions and no manufacturer advertises. A well-used one softens at the fold from years of the same downward motion, worn pale along the crease. It is the only textile in the cabin required to work in two dimensions and two seasons, folding down for glare, sliding sideways for low autumn sun, and it does this without once being washed, which is either impressive or slightly alarming depending on how closely you look.
