The diving board

An instrument tuned in a factory, installed on the advice of an insurance underwriter, and used mostly as a walkway.

Under a walking adult the board flexes perhaps half an inch at the tip, barely perceptible, but under the compression of a jump the same board can bend six to eight inches before returning nearly all of that energy upward in under half a second. The aluminum core, wrapped in a textured fiberglass shell for grip, is tuned like an instrument: too stiff and the board returns a jump flat and unremarkable, too flexible and a diver overshoots the entry, so competition boards are calibrated to a specific deflection measured in a factory rather than guessed at on site. Municipal pools rarely install anything beyond a one-meter board now, having phased out three-meter platforms over the last two decades on the advice of insurance underwriters rather than swimmers, who by most accounts preferred the higher board and said so at more than one city council meeting without changing the outcome. The fulcrum, a roller under the board's midpoint, can be adjusted forward or back to change how much length sits behind the pivot, a setting most recreational boards leave fixed in one position for years because nobody on staff remembers how to move it or why they would. Grip texture wears down first at the very tip, worn smooth by thousands of bare feet curling their toes over the edge before takeoff, and a board resurfaced too late becomes, for a season, a genuinely hazardous piece of municipal equipment rather than a merely unglamorous one. Most divers use perhaps eighteen inches of the board's full length, the last stretch before the tip, and the rest exists only to be walked across.
